The Story Behind the Design

The Jordan name in Ireland has both Norman-Irish and Gaelic origins. Mac Siurtáin in Irish —ome branches of the Jordan family were descendants of Jordan de Exeter, one of the Anglo-Norman lords who came to Connacht in the thirteenth century with the de Burgh family. Over the centuries, these Norman Jordan families became thoroughly Gaelicised in the west of Ireland, speaking Irish, adopting Gaelic customs, and intermarrying with the native families around them. In Mayo and Connacht, the Jordan name represents one of the most complete examples of Norman families absorbed entirely into the Gaelic world. This Irish woven blanket features the Jordan family crest against the Irish National Tartan.

History & Heritage

The Mac Siurtáin families of County Mayo were lords of a territory in the barony of Carra, part of the landscape of south Mayo between Lough Mask and Clew Bay. Like the other Connacht Norman families — the Burkes, the Jennings, the Costellos — the Jordans became so thoroughly part of the Gaelic world that by the sixteenth century they were distinguished from Gaelic families only by the memory of their Norman origin. The Jordan name today is associated particularly with Mayo and Galway, and it is found throughout the Connacht diaspora wherever west of Ireland families emigrated.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Jordan family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
