The Story Behind the Design
The Kavanagh name is one of the great Gaelic surnames of Leinster, the family claiming descent from Dermot MacMurrough — the infamous king of Leinster whose invitation to the Normans in 1169 opened the chapter of the Norman invasion of Ireland. Mac Caomhánaigh in Irish, the Kavanaghs took their name from Caomhán, a baptismal name connected to Ferns in County Wexford, and they became the dominant Gaelic dynasty of south Leinster through the medieval period, lords of a territory stretching across Wexford, Carlow, and Kilkenny. This Irish woven blanket features the Kavanagh family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of Leinster’s most storied Gaelic names.
History & Heritage
The Kavanaghs were kings of Leinster after the coming of the Normans, maintaining their Gaelic kingship in the south of the province even as the Normans controlled the north and east. Their castle at Ferns in County Wexford was a centre of power, and the family produced a series of formidable chiefs who resisted English encroachment for centuries. Art Mac Murchadha Caomhánach — Art Kavanagh — was the most celebrated, a warrior king who fought Henry IV’s forces to a standstill at the end of the fourteenth century. The family’s power waned through the sixteenth century, but the Kavanagh name remained central to the identity of County Wexford and south Leinster, where it is found in great numbers today.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Kavanagh family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
