The Story Behind the Design
The Keegan name in Ireland derives from the Gaelic Mac Aodhagáin — son of little Aodh, a diminutive of Aodh, the ancient Irish name meaning fire. The Mac Aodhagáin family were one of the most celebrated bardic and legal families in medieval Ireland, hereditary brehons — Gaelic lawyers — who served the great dynasties of Connacht and Leinster and whose legal learning was recognised across the Gaelic world. Their tradition centred on County Galway and Tipperary, and the Mac Aodhagáin school of law was one of the great institutions of medieval Gaelic Ireland. This Irish woven blanket features the Keegan family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
The Mac Aodhagáin — the Keegans — were hereditary brehons who served the O'Kellys of Ui Maine in Galway and other Connacht lords, maintaining the great tradition of Brehon law — the ancient Irish legal system that governed Gaelic society for centuries. Their school of law at Duniry in County Galway was one of several Mac Aodhagáin centres of legal learning scattered across the country, and the family produced outstanding scholars and lawyers through the medieval period. The name Keegan today is found principally in Connacht and Leinster, a living reminder of one of the most distinguished learned families in Irish history.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Keegan family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
