The Story Behind the Design

The Kinsella name is a Gaelic Irish surname of genuine historical antiquity, the family descendants of the ancient kingdom of Ui Ceinsealaigh — the territory that gave its name to County Wexford itself, the county formerly known as Ui Ceinsealaigh before the Norman period. Mac Céinsealaigh in Irish, the Kinsellas were the ruling family of this ancient Leinster kingdom, their territory encompassing much of what is now County Wexford, and they were among the families dispossessed by the Kavanaghs after the Norman arrival transformed the political order of south Leinster. This Irish woven blanket features the Kinsella family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of the oldest Gaelic names in County Wexford.

History & Heritage

Ui Ceinsealaigh was one of the ancient kingdoms of Leinster, predating the Norman arrival by many centuries, and the Mac Céinsealaigh — the Kinsellas — were its ruling family. After the Norman conquest of south Leinster in the twelfth century, the political power of the Kinsellas was supplanted by the Kavanaghs and the incoming Norman lords, but the family name survived and the Kinsellas remained part of the Wexford Gaelic community through the medieval and early modern periods. The name is deeply associated with County Wexford today and is found throughout the Irish diaspora wherever Wexford families emigrated.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Kinsella family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
