The Story Behind the Design
The Kirwan name is one of the Tribes of Galway — the fourteen merchant families who dominated the commercial and civic life of Galway city through the medieval and early modern period. O'Ciardhubháin in Irish — from ciar dubhán, meaning dark-complexioned — the Kirwans were among the most powerful of these Galway merchant dynasties, their ships trading across Europe and their families serving as mayors, aldermen, and civic leaders for generations. This Irish woven blanket features the Kirwan family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of Galway’s most distinguished merchant families.
History & Heritage
The Tribes of Galway — the Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, Deane, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris, Skerrett, and Darcy families — were the Anglo-Norman and later Hiberno-Norman merchant dynasties who made Galway one of the great trading cities of Atlantic Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Kirwans were prominent among them, their wealth built on trade with France, Spain, and the broader Atlantic world. They served repeatedly as mayors of the city and as leaders of the civic community, their name woven into the fabric of Galway’s remarkable history. The Kirwan name today is strongly associated with County Galway.
