The Story Behind the Design

The Lally name in Ireland derives from the Gaelic O'Mullally — O'Maolalá in Irish — a family of the Ui Maine territory in County Galway, hereditary poets and historians to the O'Kelly kings. The Mullally/Lally families were part of the learned class of Connacht, their role as bardic historians to one of Connacht’s great dynasties placing them at the centre of the Gaelic cultural world. The name was shortened from O'Mullally to Lally in the anglicisation process, and it is the Lally form that became famous in French history through Count Lally — Thomas Arthur de Lally, born in 1702, an Irish Jacobite exile whose father was a Galway Lally, who became a Marshal of France and one of the most controversial figures of the Seven Years’ War. This Irish woven blanket features the Lally family crest against the Irish National Tartan.

History & Heritage

The O'Mullally families were hereditary poets to the O'Kelly kings of Ui Maine in County Galway, their tradition of bardic service connecting them to one of Connacht’s great cultural institutions. The Lally branch became widely known through the Wild Geese — the Irish Jacobite soldiers and their families who fled to France after the Williamite wars and whose descendants served in the French army across the eighteenth century. Count Lally’s dramatic career and tragic execution in 1766 made the name famous far beyond Ireland. The family’s roots remain firmly in County Galway and the Ui Maine tradition.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Lally family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
