The Story Behind the Design
The O'Lalor name carries a proud Gaelic heritage in County Laois, the family lords of Ui Dortain in the barony of Stradbally through the medieval period. O'Leathlobhair in Irish, the Lalors were part of the Gaelic community of the midlands — a region whose resistance to the Tudor conquest and the first plantation in Irish history made it one of the most historically charged landscapes in the island. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Lalor family crest against the Irish National Tartan, for those who carry this County Laois name with pride.
Roots & History
The midland county of Laois was the territory of several Gaelic families who resisted English encroachment into the sixteenth century, and the O'Lalors were among them. The plantation of Laois in the 1550s — the first experiment in systematic colonisation in Irish history — displaced many of the native families, but the O'Lalor name survived and continued in the county. James Fintan Lalor, born in Stradbally in County Laois in 1807, became one of the most influential thinkers of the Irish revolutionary tradition, his writings on land and sovereignty shaping the Land League movement and later republican thought. The Lalor name carries that history of both ancient Gaelic roots and modern Irish intellectual tradition.
How It’s Made
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Lalor family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece in the correct manner.
