Livingstone comes from the lands of Livingston in West Lothian, where the Lowland family — the Livingstons of Callendar — rose to influence in the later Middle Ages. A separate Highland line, the MacLeas or Livingstones of Argyll, long served as hereditary keepers of the staff of St Moluag, so the name carries both a Lowland and a Highland story.
