The Story Behind the Design

The O'Mannion name is a Gaelic Irish surname found in County Galway and the Connacht region, the family part of the native Irish community of the west. O'Mainnin in Irish, the Mannion families were lords of a territory in east County Galway, part of the Ui Maine world that produced many of the great Connacht family names. Their territory was in the area around Loughrea in east Galway, and they appear in the medieval records as a family of local standing within the broader Ui Maine political world. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Mannion family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a County Galway Gaelic heritage.

History & Heritage

The O'Mannion families were part of the great Ui Maine territory of east Galway and south Roscommon, one of the most important political units of medieval Connacht. Like the O'Kellys, O'Maddens, and other Ui Maine families, the Mannions held a defined territory within the province and appear in the genealogical records of the period as a family of genuine local standing. The name today is strongly associated with County Galway, found across the east of the county and throughout the diaspora wherever Galway families emigrated.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Mannion family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
