The Story Behind the Design

The McCartan name in Ireland is a Gaelic Irish surname — Mac Artain in Irish, son of Artan, a diminutive of Art, one of the oldest and most honoured personal names in the Gaelic tradition, borne by Art MacMurrough Kavanagh and other great Gaelic figures — found in County Down and the south Ulster counties. The McCartan families were lords of Kinelarty in County Down, a barony in the south of the county whose landscape of drumlins and drumlin lakes defines the distinctive topography of the Irish drumlin belt. This Irish woven blanket features the McCartan family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a County Down Gaelic heritage.

History & Heritage

The McCartan lords of Kinelarty held their territory in south County Down through the medieval period, their name associated with the rolling drumlin landscape between the Mourne Mountains and the shores of Strangford Lough. Like many of the great Ulster Gaelic families, the McCartans experienced the upheavals of the Plantation era and the subsequent centuries of change, but their name endured in County Down and spread through the Ulster diaspora in the centuries of emigration. The McCartan name today is associated particularly with County Down and the south Ulster region.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the McCartan family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
