The Story Behind the Design

The McDermot name is one of the great Gaelic surnames of Connacht — Mac Diarmada in Irish, son of Diarmait, one of the most celebrated personal names in Irish mythology and history, borne by Diarmait Mac Murchada who invited the Normans to Ireland and by the legendary hero Diarmait of the Love Spot. The MacDermots were kings of Moylurg in County Roscommon, one of the great Connacht dynasties, their castle at Rock of Lough Key on the shores of Lough Key in north Roscommon a commanding presence in the landscape of the province. This Irish woven blanket features the MacDermot family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of Connacht’s most distinguished royal families.

History & Heritage

The MacDermot kings of Moylurg held their territory in the barony of Boyle in north County Roscommon, their Rock of Lough Key castle standing on an island in the beautiful lake that gives the barony its name. The MacDermots appear in the medieval annals as a family of real power in Connacht, their territory the landscape of north Roscommon where the Curlew Mountains meet the lake country of the province. The Prince of Coolavin — a title still held by the MacDermot family — is one of the few surviving Gaelic Irish chiefly titles, a living connection to the medieval world of Gaelic Connacht.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the MacDermot family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
