The Story Behind the Design
The McDonnell name in Ireland is a Gaelic surname of Scottish origin — Mac Domhnaill in Irish, son of Domhnall, a name meaning world ruler — carried to Ireland by the great MacDonnell dynasty of the Hebrides who established themselves as lords of the Glens of Antrim in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The MacDonnells of Antrim were one of the most powerful families in late medieval Ulster, their sea power spanning both sides of the North Channel and their castle at Dunluce on the Antrim coast one of the most dramatically sited fortresses in Ireland. This Irish woven blanket features the McDonnell family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring the lords of the Glens of Antrim.
History & Heritage
The MacDonnells came from the Scottish isles to the Glens of Antrim in the early fifteenth century, their sea power making them dominant across the North Channel. Sorley Boy MacDonnell — Somhairle Buidhe Mac Domhnaill — was the most celebrated of the Antrim MacDonnells, his decades-long resistance to the Tudor conquest of Ulster making him one of the most remarkable figures of the Elizabethan era. The family’s influence shaped the distinctive character of the north Antrim coast, a region where the Scottish and Irish Gaelic worlds met and merged across the narrow channel. The McDonnell name today is found across Antrim and throughout the Ulster diaspora.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the McDonnell family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
