The Story Behind the Design
The McFadden name in Ireland is a Gaelic Irish surname — Mac Paitín in Irish, son of little Patrick, a diminutive of the saint’s name that was the most honoured in Ireland — found principally in County Donegal and the north-west Ulster counties, the family part of the native Irish community of the province. The McFadden families were part of the Gaelic world of Donegal, a county whose rugged Atlantic landscape and strong Gaelic tradition made it one of the most distinctively Irish counties in the island. This Irish woven blanket features the McFadden family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
The McFadden families of County Donegal were part of the Gaelic Irish community of the north-west, their name a devotional surname honouring Saint Patrick, the patron of Ireland. Father James McFadden of Gweedore — the celebrated ‘Sagart Aroon’, the beloved priest — was the most famous McFadden in Donegal history, his passionate defence of the rights of his Gweedore parishioners against eviction and rack-renting in the 1880s making him one of the most celebrated figures of the Land League era in Ulster. His confrontation with the RIC in 1889 became one of the defining moments of Donegal’s agrarian history.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the McFadden family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
