The Story Behind the Design
The McHale name in Ireland is a Gaelic Irish surname — Mac Héil in Irish, son of Héal, a personal name of Norse origin — found principally in County Mayo and the Connacht counties, the family part of the Gaelic world of the west. The McHale families were part of the community of north Mayo, a landscape of mountains, bogs, and Atlantic coastline that was one of the most severely affected by the Great Famine of the 1840s. The most celebrated McHale in Irish history is Archbishop John ‘Lion of the West’ MacHale of Tuam, the formidable nineteenth-century archbishop who championed the Irish language, opposed Famine-era policies, and was among the most outspoken voices of Catholic Ireland in the Victorian era. This Irish woven blanket features the McHale family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
Archbishop John MacHale of Tuam — born in 1791 in Tubbernavine, County Mayo — served as Archbishop of Tuam from 1834 until his death in 1881, his long tenure making him one of the defining figures of the Irish Catholic church in the nineteenth century. His championing of the Irish language, his bitter opposition to English-medium education in the National Schools system, and his powerful interventions during the Famine era made him the most prominent churchman of his generation. The McHale name today is associated primarily with County Mayo and is found throughout the Connacht diaspora.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the McHale family crest and the Irish National Tartan integrated into the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
