The Story Behind the Design

The McSweeney name in Ireland is a Gaelic surname of Scottish origin — Mac Suibhne in Irish, son of Suibhne, a personal name meaning pleasant or well-going — the family gallowglass warriors who came from the Scottish Hebrides in the service of the O’Donnell lords of Donegal in the fourteenth century and became one of the most powerful families of Ulster. Three branches of the Mac Suibhne family established themselves in County Donegal — Mac Suibhne na dTuath, Mac Suibhne Fanad, and Mac Suibhne Baghúin — their names preserving the territories they held across the county. This Irish woven blanket features the McSweeney family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring the gallowglass lords of Donegal.

History & Heritage

The Mac Suibhne gallowglass families came to Donegal in the service of the O’Donnell lords, their military skill making them among the most valued warriors in Ulster. Their three branches held territories across the county — Fanad in the north, the Rosses and Tuath in the west, and Baghún in the south — and they became thoroughly embedded in the Gaelic world of Donegal across the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries. When the O’Donnell power ended with the Flight of the Earls in 1607, the Mac Suibhne families remained in the county, their name carried through the generations to the present day.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the McSweeney family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
