The Story Behind the Design

The O'Melaghlin name is one of the great Gaelic royal surnames of Ireland, the family the kings of Meath — one of the five ancient provinces of Ireland — and high kings of all Ireland in the centuries before and after the Viking age. O'Máel Sechlainn in Irish, the Melaghlins were descendants of Malachy I and Malachy II, both high kings of Ireland — the second Malachy alternating the high kingship with Brian Boru himself in the remarkable political drama of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Melaghlin family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of Ireland’s most ancient royal dynasties.

History & Heritage

The Melaghlins of Meath were kings of the midland province that gave its name to the entire country in its ancient political geography — the province of Meath, the middle kingdom, was one of the most sacred political territories in Gaelic Ireland, its kingship the stepping stone to the high kingship at Tara. Malachy II — Máel Sechlainn Mór — was high king of Ireland from 980 to 1002, when Brian Boru displaced him, and again from 1014 to his death in 1022. The O'Melaghlin dynasty continued to rule Meath in diminished form through the Norman period and beyond, their name preserved today as one of the most historically resonant in all of Ireland.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Melaghlin family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
