The Story Behind the Design
The O'Molloy name is a Gaelic Irish surname of genuine territorial distinction, the family lords of Fera Cell — a territory in County Offaly that encompassed the landscape around the ancient monastery of Durrow, one of the great monastic foundations of early medieval Ireland. O'Maolagha in Irish, the Molloys were kings of their territory in the midlands through the medieval period, and Durrow — founded by Saint Columba in the sixth century and famous for the Book of Durrow, one of the earliest surviving Insular Gospel manuscripts — stood at the spiritual heart of their domain. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Molloy family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a County Offaly Gaelic heritage of remarkable depth.
History & Heritage
The O'Molloys were lords of Fera Cell — the territory of the men of the churches — a name that reflects the extraordinary density of monastic foundations in their midland territory. As well as Durrow, the O'Molloy lands were surrounded by the great monastic sites of Clonmacnoise, Seir Kieran, and Rahan, making their territory one of the most ecclesiastically significant in all of Ireland. The Book of Durrow, produced at the monastery around 680 AD, is one of the treasures of early Irish Christian art, now housed in Trinity College Dublin. The O'Molloy name carries all of that extraordinary monastic heritage.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Molloy family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
