The Story Behind the Design
The Moore name in Ireland has both Gaelic and English settler origins. O'Mórdha in Irish — from mór, meaning great or noble — the O'More family were lords of Laois, one of the great Gaelic dynasties of the Irish midlands who resisted the Tudor conquest with extraordinary tenacity through the sixteenth century. Rory O'More, the sixteenth-century chieftain of Laois, was one of the most celebrated Gaelic warriors of the Tudor era. The English settler Moore families also arrived in Ireland through the plantation period, particularly in Ulster. This Irish woven blanket features the Moore family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring both strands of Irish Moore heritage.
History & Heritage
The O'More lords of Laois — also written O’Moor or Moore — held their territory in what is now County Laois through the medieval period, their resistance to the Tudor plantation making them among the most celebrated Gaelic warriors of the sixteenth century. The plantation of Laois and Offaly in the 1550s was directed specifically against the O’Mores and O’Connors, who fought back for decades. Rory Og O'More, who continued the resistance into the 1570s, became a byword for Gaelic defiance. The Moore name today is one of the most widespread in Ireland, found in every province and throughout the diaspora.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Moore family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
