Ó Briain means descendant of Brian — Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, who fell at Clontarf in 1014 on the day his forces broke the Norse power in Dublin. His descendants ruled Thomond, the north Munster kingdom centred on Clare and Limerick, first as kings and later as Earls of Thomond, and the line continues today as Barons Inchiquin at Dromoland. Bunratty Castle stood among their strongholds. It remains one of the most numerous surnames in Ireland, and one of the very few that can name its founder.
