That crowned hand is earned, not decorative. When King James I was murdered in 1437, it was the Robertson chief, Robert Riabhach, who hunted down the assassins and handed them to the Crown. James II rewarded him with the right to bear the imperial crown — a privilege otherwise reserved for royalty — and it was from this Robert that the clan took the name "Robert's sons."
