The Sarsfield Name

Of Norman-Irish origin — the family established in County Dublin and County Kildare from the thirteenth century — the Sarsfields became one of the most distinguished Old English Catholic families of the Pale. Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan, is the name’s most celebrated bearer: the greatest Irish military commander of the late seventeenth century, who led the defence of Limerick against Williamite forces in 1691 and negotiated the Treaty of Limerick. When that treaty was broken, Sarsfield led eleven thousand Irish soldiers to France under the Flight of the Wild Geese, serving with distinction in the French and Spanish armies. He died at the Battle of Landen in 1693, reportedly saying “Would to God this were for Ireland” — words that echo through Irish history to this day. The Sarsfield name carries that sacrifice and that loyalty.
