The Sherlock Name
From the Anglo-Norman scir-loc — meaning bright hair or fair-haired, a personal description turned into a surname — the Sherlock family came to Ireland in the wake of the Norman settlement and established themselves in County Meath and County Dublin. They became part of the Old English Catholic community of the Pale, their name appearing in the records of the medieval Irish church and in civic life. The Sherlocks produced churchmen and legal figures across the centuries, their name a consistent presence in Leinster records.
