The Story Behind the Design

The Stack family are of Norman origin — de Stac or Stac in the earliest records — who came to Ireland with the Norman settlement and established themselves so thoroughly in County Kerry that they became as Gaelic as any family in the province. The name appears in the records of Kerry and Limerick from the medieval period, the Stacks counted among the families of the Kerry Geraldines’ territory. By the early modern period they were firmly part of the native Irish Catholic gentry of Munster. Austin Stack, one of the most significant figures in the Irish revolutionary period — a leading member of Sinn Féin and the Irish Republican Army, and a close associate of Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera — is the name’s most celebrated modern bearer, his Kerry roots defining his character and his politics.
