The Story Behind the Design
The Staunton name in Ireland carries the heritage of the Anglo-Norman settlement in Connacht — a family that put down deep roots in County Mayo and County Galway and became, over centuries, an integral part of the western Irish world. This woven blanket honours that heritage through the Staunton family crest and the Irish National Tartan.
The Staunton Name
De Stanton in its original form — from a place name common in England, meaning stone settlement — the Staunton family came to Connacht in the thirteenth century as part of the great Anglo-Norman colonisation of the west. They received lands in County Mayo, where they established themselves as a significant family of the province. Like many of the Connacht Normans, the Stauntons Gaelicised deeply over time, intermarrying with local Gaelic families and adopting Irish customs and language. By the late medieval period they were effectively an Irish family, their origins as settlers absorbed into the broader Connacht identity. The name endures today in Mayo and Galway, a quiet testament to the deep integration of Norman and Gaelic Ireland in the west.
Woven Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven on a loom, not printed. The Staunton crest and Irish tartan design are integral to the textile — formed thread by thread, giving the piece its weight, depth, and lasting quality. Premium cotton yarn and traditional fringed edges complete the finish.
