The Stopford Name
From the English place name Stockport (Stopford in earlier forms) in Cheshire — the Stopford family came to Ireland in the seventeenth century and established themselves among the settler gentry of Leinster. They appear in the records of County Meath and County Wexford, part of the Protestant professional and landowning community that shaped the east of Ireland through the Georgian and Victorian periods. Edward Stopford, Bishop of Meath in the nineteenth century, is among the more distinguished historical bearers of the name in an Irish context. The family’s military tradition is also notable: the Stopfords produced several officers in the British Army, and the name appears in the records of Irish regiments. The Stopford name endures today as one of the quieter but distinctive markers of the Anglo-Irish gentry tradition.
