The Story Behind the Design

The Vandeleur name carries one of the most distinctive heritages in Irish history — a Huguenot family of Dutch origin that came to Ireland in the late seventeenth century and became deeply embedded in the life of County Clare. This woven blanket honours that remarkable lineage through the Vandeleur family crest and the Irish National Tartan.

The Vandeleur Name

From the Dutch van de leur — of the locality or the place — the Vandeleur family were Huguenot refugees who came to Ireland following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, part of the great wave of Protestant French and Dutch settlers who enriched Irish civic and commercial life in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They established themselves in County Clare, where they became one of the prominent gentry families of the county. Crofton Moore Vandeleur is the name’s most discussed historical bearer — a landlord who established the Ralahine Agricultural and Manufacturing Co-operative in County Clare in 1831, one of the most remarkable social experiments in pre-Famine Ireland, predating the wider co-operative movement by decades. The Vandeleur name therefore carries both the Huguenot refugee tradition and a significant place in the history of Irish agrarian reform.

Woven Craftsmanship

The Vandeleur crest and Irish tartan design are woven into the fabric — not printed. The pattern is integral to every thread, giving the blanket genuine depth, warmth, and lasting quality. Made from premium cotton yarn with traditional fringed edges.
