The Story Behind the Design
The Walsh name is one of the most common in Ireland — and one of the most historically interesting, rooted not in Gaelic tradition but in the great Norman settlement of the twelfth century. This woven blanket honours that deep and layered heritage through the Walsh family crest and the distinctive tones of the Irish National Tartan.
The Walsh Name
Breathnach in Irish — meaning Welshman or Briton — the Walsh family descend from the Cambro-Norman soldiers who came to Ireland with Strongbow in 1169, many of whom were of Welsh origin or had been settled in Wales before crossing to Ireland. Over the centuries that followed, the Walshs became one of the most widely distributed families in the island, settling across Leinster and Munster and intermarrying with the Gaelic Irish until they were fully absorbed into Irish life. The Walshs were counted among the Fourteen Tribes of Galway, one of the founding merchant families of that great trading city. Today Walsh is the fourth most common surname in Ireland, found from Connacht to Munster, Ulster to Leinster — as Irish as any Gaelic name in the land.
