Meet Clan MacLean: Island Warriors of Duart Castle
Share
Origins and Early History
Clan MacLean (also spelled MacLaine, especially in the branch of Lochbuie) is one of the oldest Highland clans, tracing its lineage back to the 13th century. The name is derived from the Gaelic Mac Gille Eathain, meaning "son of the servant of St. John."
Founded by Gillean of the Battle Axe, a fearsome warrior known for his prowess in battle, the clan quickly established itself as a dominant force in the Western Isles, especially the Isle of Mull.
The Seat of Power: Duart Castle
Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Sound of Mull, Duart Castle has served as the ancestral seat of the MacLeans since the 14th century. Its imposing stone walls have withstood centuries of conflict—from clan feuds to English invasions—and remain one of Scotland’s most iconic and photographed castles.
Duart Castle was restored in the 20th century and is still owned by the MacLean family today, serving as a proud symbol of heritage and resilience.
Reputation and Rivalries
Clan MacLean earned a reputation for unflinching bravery and loyalty, often to the point of stubbornness. They were strong supporters of the Lords of the Isles and participated in numerous battles, including the Battle of Harlaw in 1411.
Their most infamous feud was with the powerful Campbells, resulting in several bloody encounters, including the tragic story of Lady MacLean, who was allegedly left to starve on a rock by her Campbell husband.
