FitzGerald means “son of Gerald,” and in Irish the name is Mac Gearailt. The family descends from Gerald, constable of Pembroke, whose son Maurice FitzGerald came to Ireland with Strongbow and received great grants of land. His descendants, the Geraldines, ranked with the Burkes and Butlers as the most powerful Anglo-Norman families in Ireland, and they soon took up Irish speech and custom. Two branches led the way: the earls of Kildare, ruling from Maynooth Castle on the edge of the Pale, and the earls of Desmond, whose strongholds included Askeaton and Newcastle West in County Limerick.
Garret Mór FitzGerald, the Great Earl of Kildare, governed Ireland for the Crown for decades, and Lord Edward FitzGerald gave the name a place in the 1798 rising of the United Irishmen.
The collection covers all three spellings. Choose the FitzGerald woven blanket, the Fitz-Gerald accent mug or the Fitz-Gerald ceramic ornament, each on the Irish National Tartan, along with the Fitzgerald garden flag and tartan coaster set. The Fitz-Gerald T-shirt and novelty license plate round out the range. Explore the FitzGerald surname history.
