The Story Behind the Design
Few surnames in Irish history carry the weight of FitzGerald. The Earls of Kildare and the Earls of Desmond — the two great FitzGerald dynasties — were for centuries among the most powerful families in Ireland, their influence shaping the political, cultural, and military life of the island from the twelfth century to the Tudor rebellions. The FitzGeralds came to Ireland with Strongbow's invasion of 1169, descended from the Norman lord Maurice FitzGerald, and within a few generations they had become more Irish than the Irish themselves — Hibernis ipsis Hiberniores. This Irish woven blanket, featuring the FitzGerald family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honours one of Ireland's greatest dynastic names.
History & Heritage
The Kildare FitzGeralds — the Earls of Kildare, known as the Geraldines — became the dominant power in fifteenth-century Ireland, their influence so great that the eighth Earl, Gearóid Mór, governed the island as Lord Deputy for decades. His son Gearóid Óg continued that dominance until Henry VIII moved to curtail it, leading to the Silken Thomas Rebellion of 1534 and the near-annihilation of the Kildare line. The Desmond FitzGeralds in Munster ruled a vast territory across Counties Cork and Kerry, their power ending in the Desmond Rebellions of the 1570s and 1580s, one of the most devastating conflicts of Elizabethan Ireland. Through both branches, the FitzGerald name is woven deeply into the fabric of Irish history.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven, not printed. The FitzGerald family crest and the Irish National Tartan are formed within the cotton textile during the weaving process — part of the cloth structure itself rather than applied to its surface. The result is a piece of genuine textile depth: rich, consistent woven pattern visible on both sides of the cloth, a substantial feel in the hand from the premium cotton yarn, and traditional fringed edges that finish the piece in keeping with its quality. A woven blanket is built to carry a great name across generations.
