Leary, more fully O'Leary, is an anglicisation of the Gaelic Ó Laoghaire, meaning “descendant of Laoghaire” — a personal name traditionally understood as “keeper of calves” or “herdsman.” Purely Gaelic in origin, the O'Learys were a notable sept of the Corca Laoighdhe in the south-west of Ireland, becoming strongly established in County Cork, especially around Inchigeelagh and the valley of the River Lee.
The Gaelic form and regional setting are the useful starting points for research, since a modern surname can represent more than one historic line.
The Leary collection currently includes mug, woven blanket, T-shirt, novelty license plate, coaster set, garden flag, and ceramic ornament. The woven blanket is the most substantial home piece where available. Designs use the Leary name and crest; where Irish National Tartan appears, it is a shared Irish heritage background rather than a hereditary family tartan.
