The most celebrated bearer of the name in history is Art O’Laoghaire — Art O’Leary — the young Gaelic gentleman who was shot dead by a British officer in 1773 for refusing to sell his horse, and whose death inspired his wife Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill to compose Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, the Lament for Art O’Leary, one of the greatest poems in the Irish language. The O’Leary name today is widespread across Cork and Munster and throughout the Irish diaspora.
