The Story Behind the Design

The O'Leary name is one of the great Gaelic surnames of County Cork and the Munster province, the family lords of Iveagh in the barony of West Muskerry — a territory in the mountains and valleys of west Cork between the Lee and the Sullane rivers, one of the most strikingly beautiful landscapes in all of Ireland. O'Laoghaire in Irish, the O'Learys were a family of real territorial standing in the Gaelic world of Munster, their ancestral land in the region of Inchigeela and Macroom in west Cork. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Leary family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of Cork’s most enduring Gaelic names.

History & Heritage

The O'Leary lords of Iveagh held their territory in the heart of MacCarthy country in west Cork, neighbours to the great MacCarthy dynasty whose power dominated Munster through the medieval period. The most celebrated bearer of the name in history is Art O’Laoghaire — Art O’Leary — the young Gaelic gentleman who was shot dead by a British officer in 1773 for refusing to sell his horse, and whose death inspired his wife Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill to compose Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, the Lament for Art O’Leary, one of the greatest poems in the Irish language. The O’Leary name today is widespread across Cork and Munster and throughout the Irish diaspora.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Leary family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
