Lynch Irish Family Gifts & Heritage

Lynch unites two proud Irish lineages. The Norman de Lench family, named for a “linch” or hill, settled at Knock in County Meath after the Anglo-Norman invasion, and a branch moved to Galway early in the fourteenth century. The Gaelic Ó Loingsigh, “descendant of Loingseach,” takes its name from loingeas, a fleet, and belonged to separate families in Antrim and Down, Tipperary, Cavan, Clare and Limerick, Cork, Sligo and Meath.

In Galway the Lynches became the most prominent of the fourteen merchant Tribes that ran the town from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, and Lynch’s Castle, built around 1500, still stands in the city center. James Lynch served as mayor in 1493, 1510 and 1515, and in the twentieth century Cork-born Jack Lynch twice led the country as Taoiseach.
