The Story Behind the Design

The Lynch name is one of the Tribes of Galway — the Lynch family were arguably the most powerful of the fourteen merchant dynasties who dominated the commercial and civic life of Galway city through the medieval and early modern period, serving as mayors of the city more times than any other family. De Lench in its Norman origin, the Lynches came to Galway in the thirteenth century with the Anglo-Norman settlement of Connacht and became so thoroughly embedded in the city’s life that their name became synonymous with Galway itself. This Irish woven blanket features the Lynch family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of the great names of Irish civic and merchant history.

History & Heritage

The Lynch family dominated Galway city across five centuries, their members serving as mayor nearly eighty times and their commercial connections reaching across the Atlantic world. Lynch’s Castle on Shop Street — the finest medieval town house in Ireland still in commercial use — stands as the most visible monument to their wealth and influence, its carved stone façade overlooking the city they helped build. The most dramatic story associated with the Lynch name is that of Mayor James Lynch FitzStephen, who in 1493 executed his own son for murder when no one else would carry out the sentence — an act of stern justice that gave the English language the word ‘lynch’, though this etymology is historically disputed. The Lynch name today is one of the most widespread in Ireland, found in every province and throughout the Irish diaspora worldwide.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Lynch family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece correctly.
