The Brabazon Name in Ireland

The name means simply the man from Brabant, the old duchy in the Low Countries, and it came to Ireland in Tudor times when Sir William Brabazon served as Vice-Treasurer. The family rose to the earldom of Meath, and their Dublin holding — the Earl of Meath's Liberty, on the south bank of the Liffey — became the heart of what Dubliners still call the Liberties. Their seat at Kilruddery, under the Little Sugar Loaf near Bray, remains with the family, its seventeenth-century gardens among the oldest in Ireland.
