The Bray Name in Ireland

One strand of the name is Ó Breaghdha, meaning a man of Brega — the ancient royal plain of Meath — and it is chiefly a Munster name today, strongest in Kerry, so the surname itself remembers a move southwest made long before records began. Another strand came with Norman and English settlers as de Bray. The Wicklow town of Bray, from the Irish Bré, is a separate matter altogether: a place-name that happens to match, not a source of the surname.
