The Bury Name in Ireland

Behind the name sits the Old English burh, the fortified place, worn down to a single syllable. In Ireland the family's high point came in the midlands: Charles William Bury became Earl of Charleville and raised Charleville Forest Castle outside Tullamore, the Gothic Revival masterpiece Francis Johnston designed among the old oaks of Offaly. An earlier line held Shannongrove in Limerick, one of the country's earliest great houses of its kind.
