The name is English, from the word for a walled yard or enclosed field, and it settled into Ulster in the seventeenth century — Antrim, Down, and Armagh have held most Irish Closes ever since. The Closes of Drumbanagher in County Armagh became one of that county's established landed families, and the name runs steadily through three centuries of Ulster parish and townland records without ever straying far from where it first put down roots.
