The Colley Name in Ireland

The Colleys were settled at Castle Carbery in County Kildare from the sixteenth century, an Old English family whose name also interchanged with Cowley in Irish records. Their place in the wider story came by inheritance: Richard Colley of the Kildare line took the name Wesley on succeeding to a cousin's estates, and his grandson, born in Dublin in 1769, became Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. The victor of Waterloo was, by blood, a Colley.
