The Courcy Name in Ireland

The name is Norman, from Courcy in Normandy. In 1177 John de Courcy marched north from Dublin, took Downpatrick, and held Ulster as his own for a quarter of a century, beginning the great castle at Carrickfergus that still commands Belfast Lough. The family's lasting Irish seat, though, is at the other end of the island: the de Courcys of Kinsale, County Cork, hold the barony of Kingsale — the premier barony of Ireland — and have held it for more than seven centuries.
