The Coyle Name in Ireland

The Irish is Mac Giolla Comhghaill — son of the servant of Comhghall — and the Comhghall in question is Saint Comgall, who founded the monastery at Bangor in County Down in the sixth century and sent Columbanus and his companions out across Europe from it. Names of this shape are devotional: an ancestor was dedicated to a particular saint, and the dedication became the family name. Coyle belongs to Donegal above all, with the wider name spread through Tyrone and the north-west, and it is also written McCool and MacIlhoyle depending on which part of the long Gaelic original a record-keeper decided to keep.
