The Echlin name is associated with County Down and the Ulster Protestant tradition, with the family documented in the province from the seventeenth century. Robert Echlin served as Church of Ireland Bishop of Down and Connor in the 1600s, and the family remained a recognised presence in Ulster civic life across subsequent generations.
