The Story Behind the Design

The O'Flaherty name is one of the great Gaelic dynasties of Connacht — lords of Iar-Connacht, the western reaches of County Galway stretching from Lough Corrib to the Atlantic, a wild and beautiful territory of mountains, islands, and ancient passes that the O'Flahertys defended as their own for centuries. In their heyday, the O'Flahertys were so formidable that the citizens of Galway city inscribed above their gates the prayer: From the fury of the O'Flaherties, good Lord deliver us. This Irish woven blanket, featuring the O'Flaherty family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honours one of Connacht's most storied Gaelic families.

History & Heritage

O'Flaithearta in Irish — from flaitheamh, meaning prince or ruler — the O'Flaherty name marks a family of sovereign standing in the west. Their territory of Iar-Connacht encompassed the coastline of Connemara, the islands of Lough Corrib, and the great passes of the Joyce Country, a landscape of extraordinary wildness that shaped both the character of the family and the endurance of their lordship. The O'Flahertys produced soldiers, chiefs, and one of the most remarkable figures in Irish history: Grace O'Malley, the pirate queen of Connacht, was married into the O'Flaherty clan as the wife of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty. Their power waned with the Tudor conquest of Connacht, but the name endures with full Gaelic dignity in County Galway and across the Irish diaspora.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Flaherty family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile during weaving, part of the cloth structure rather than a surface print. The result is real woven depth: rich, consistent pattern on both sides of the fabric, a substantial and soft feel in the hand, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece in the appropriate manner. A woven blanket is made to carry a great name across generations.
