The Story Behind the Design
The O'Fogarty name carries the weight of a genuine Gaelic lordship in County Tipperary — the O'Fogartys were lords of Éile O'Fogarty, a territory in the north Tipperary and south Offaly region that formed part of the ancient kingdom of Éile, one of the oldest political units in Irish history. O'Fógartaigh in Irish, the Fogarty family wielded real authority in their Tipperary territory through the medieval period, their name associated with the landscape of north Tipperary and the Shannon corridor that separated Munster from Connacht and Leinster. This Irish woven blanket, featuring the O'Fogarty family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honours a proud Tipperary Gaelic heritage.
History & Heritage
Éile was one of the ancient kingdoms of Ireland, predating the Norman arrival by many centuries, and it was divided between the O'Fogarty and O'Carroll families in the medieval period — the O'Fogartys holding the western portion in what is now County Tipperary. Their territory was known as Éile O'Fogarty, a name that still survives in the anglicised form Ely O'Fogarty, and the barony of Ikerrin in north Tipperary preserves the memory of the O'Fogarty lordship. The family survived the upheavals of the Norman period and the Tudor conquest, their name enduring in Tipperary and spreading through the Irish diaspora in the centuries that followed.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Fogarty family crest and the Irish National Tartan integrated into the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. The design is part of the cloth from the beginning: consistent woven depth on both sides, rich pattern and texture, a soft and substantial feel in the hand, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
