The Story Behind the Design
The Hackett name in Ireland is a Norman-Irish surname with deep roots in the south-east of the island, the family one of the established Anglo-Norman dynasties of County Kilkenny and County Tipperary. The Hacketts came to Ireland with or shortly after the Norman invasion of 1169, settling in the rich agricultural land of the Kilkenny and Tipperary region where they became part of the established Norman-Irish gentry. The name appears consistently in the medieval records of these counties, and the Hackett family were part of the same Norman-Irish world that produced the Butlers, the Graces, and the other great Kilkenny families. This Irish woven blanket features the Hackett family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
The Hacketts of Kilkenny and Tipperary were among the Norman-Irish families who became thoroughly Hibernicised over the medieval centuries — speaking Irish, adopting Gaelic customs, and intermarrying with the established Gaelic families of Munster and Leinster. Their territory centred on the borders of Kilkenny and Tipperary, part of the rich farming country of the Irish midlands that was among the most heavily Norman-settled regions of the island. The name endured through the upheavals of the Cromwellian period and the Penal era, and it remains part of the family heritage of the south Leinster and north Munster region today.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Hackett family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not printed onto the surface. The design is part of the cloth itself: consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges completing the piece in the correct manner.
