Hyland Irish Family Crest Tartan Throw Blanket – 50″ × 60″

The O'Hyland name is a Gaelic Irish surname found in County Laois and the surrounding midland counties, the family part of the native Irish community of Leinster. O'hÁoileann in Irish, the Hyland families were part of the Gaelic world of the Laois and Offaly region — a territory that was one of the most fiercely contested in all of Ireland during the Tudor conquest, home to the O'More and O'Connor families whose resistance to English rule made the midlands one of the most turbulent frontiers of the sixteenth century. This Irish tartan throw blanket features the O'Hyland family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a County Laois midland heritage.

History & Heritage

The Hyland families of County Laois were part of the Gaelic Irish community of the midlands, inhabiting a landscape that experienced the plantation of Laois and Offaly in the 1550s — the first systematic plantation experiment in Irish history, which gave the counties their new English names of Queen’s County and King’s County before they were restored to their Gaelic forms in the twentieth century. The Hyland name endured through that plantation and the subsequent upheavals, and today it is found across the midland counties and through the diaspora wherever Laois and Offaly families settled.

Construction

This is a printed throw blanket — the O'Hyland family crest and the Irish National Tartan are printed in full colour on one side of a lightweight 100% polyester fabric, with a plain white reverse and clean hemmed edges. It’s a soft, easy-care everyday throw rather than a heavyweight, fringe-edged woven textile.
