The Story Behind the Design
The Keane name in Ireland derives from two distinct Gaelic origins: O'Catháin in Ulster — the great O'Kane lords of Keenaght in County Derry — and Mac Céin in Munster, a separate family rooted in Connacht and the west. The O'Kanes of Derry were one of the most powerful Gaelic dynasties of Ulster, lords of a territory between the Bann and the Foyle that encompassed much of County Derry, and they played a central role in the politics of the province through the medieval and early modern periods. This Irish woven blanket features the Keane family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a name of genuine Gaelic distinction in both Ulster and Munster.
History & Heritage
The O'Catháin — O'Kane or Keane — were lords of Keenaght, their territory in County Derry placing them at the heart of Ulster’s most Gaelic province. They were closely allied with the great O'Neill dynasty, and their power made them one of the key families of the Nine Years’ War, the last great Gaelic resistance to English rule that ended with the Flight of the Earls in 1607. The separate Munster Keane family — Mac Céin — was rooted in Connacht before spreading south. Together, these branches gave the Keane name a presence across several Irish provinces, and the name today is particularly concentrated in Galway, Clare, and the Ulster counties.
Construction
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Keane family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
