The Story Behind the Design
The Keating name in Ireland is a Norman-Irish surname of considerable historical distinction, the family descendants of the de Keting family who came to Ireland with the Norman invasion and settled in County Tipperary and County Wexford. The Keatings became thoroughly Hibernicised over the medieval centuries, adopting Irish language and customs and becoming indistinguishable from the Gaelic families around them. The most celebrated bearer of this name in Irish history is Geoffrey Keating — Seathrun Céitinín — the seventeenth-century County Tipperary priest, poet, and historian whose Foras Feasa ar Éirinn (A Basis of Knowledge About Ireland) was one of the foundational works of Irish historical writing. This Irish woven blanket features the Keating family crest against the Irish National Tartan.
History & Heritage
Geoffrey Keating, born around 1580 in the barony of Iffa and Offa in County Tipperary, wrote his great history of Ireland in Irish — a deliberate act of cultural preservation at a time when Gaelic Ireland was under severe pressure from the English administration. His work, completed around 1634, drew on the great manuscript traditions of Irish learning and became one of the most widely copied texts in the Irish language, preserved across dozens of manuscripts. The Keating name, through Geoffrey’s extraordinary contribution, became synonymous with the defence of Irish culture and historical memory. The family is associated primarily with County Tipperary and the south Leinster region.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Keating family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel from the premium cotton, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece as a genuinely woven heritage item.
