The Story Behind the Design

King is one of the most common surnames in Ireland, and one of the least reliable — because in most cases it is not a translation at all, but a mistake that stuck. This premium heritage woven blanket honors the King family crest against the Irish National Tartan.

The King Name in Ireland

Half a dozen unrelated Gaelic families were turned into Kings by record-keepers who heard something resembling , king, and wrote down what they thought it meant. Mac Conraoi of west Galway — lords of Dealbhna Thíre-dá-locha in the barony of Moycullen, between Lough Corrib and Galway Bay — became King almost universally, though Woulfe records the name as son of Cúraoi, the hound of battle, with no king in it anywhere. Ó Maolconaire and Ó Conraoi in Roscommon went the same way, as did Mac Fhearadhaigh in Monaghan and Ó Conaire in Munster. In Antrim, Tyrone and Down, Mac Fhinn became King by sound rather than by meaning. Alongside all of them sits a genuine English King, a name given to someone of kingly bearing. Most Irish Kings descend from the Gaelic families rather than the English one, and the county is usually what tells you which.

How the King Blanket Is Made

Woven, not printed. The crest and the tartan are formed in 100% premium cotton yarn as the cloth is made, and the blanket is finished with traditional fringed edges.
