The Story Behind the Design
The de Lacy name is one of the most powerful in the entire history of Norman Ireland — Hugh de Lacy was granted the lordship of Meath by Henry II in 1172, the largest single land grant made to any Norman lord in Ireland, and the de Lacy dynasty that followed became one of the dominant forces in medieval Irish politics for over a century. Lords of Meath and Ulster, the de Lacys challenged the power of the English crown itself, and the family’s fortunes shaped the history of Leinster and Ulster across the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This Irish woven blanket features the Lacy family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of the great names of Norman Ireland.
History & Heritage
Hugh de Lacy received the lordship of Meath — covering roughly what are now Counties Meath, Westmeath, and parts of surrounding counties — as a reward for his service in Ireland, and he set about building a network of castles and boroughs across the province. His son Walter de Lacy succeeded him, and the family’s power extended to Ulster when Hugh de Lacy the younger was granted the earldom of Ulster in 1205. Trim Castle in County Meath, one of the largest Norman castles in Ireland, stands as the most visible monument to their ambition. The Lacy name today is found across Ireland and throughout the Irish diaspora, carrying the memory of one of the island’s most consequential Norman dynasties.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Lacy family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
